20+ Spring Speech Therapy Theme Ideas

Writer: Stacy CrouseStacy Crouse

For most of us, spring can't come too soon. Since everyone is already thinking about spring, speech-language pathologists may want to include spring activities in their speech therapy sessions.

If you know you want to include a spring theme in your speech therapy sessions but would prefer to narrow the topic a bit, I've got plenty of ways you can do just that.

Here are some of my favorite spring themes that not only engage students but also provide a rich context for creating lesson plans that target articulation and language goals.

Spring Speech Therapy Themes

These themes are the perfect way to incorporate spring vocabulary with individuals and small groups in speech therapy.

Spring Holidays

Spring holidays are a natural way to get students excited and chatting about their families' traditions, while learning about the traditions of others.

  • While Groundhog Day on February 2 is technically a winter holiday, can lend itself to talk of (and hope for) spring.

  • The first day of spring lands anywhere from March 19-21, and is a great introduction to other spring speech therapy activities and themes.

  • St. Patrick's Day on March 17 is the perfect addition to your spring lesson plans.

  • Passover is a Jewish holiday that lasts for 7-8 days in late March or April.

  • Easter, a Christian holiday, is also celebrated in late March or April.

  • April Fools' Day occurs on the first day of April and is a day when people play (hopefully) harmless tricks on each other.

  • Earth Day is April 22nd and celebrates the Earth while raising issues of the environment.

  • Mother's Day and Father's Day (the second Sunday in May and the third Sunday in June, respectively) honor and celebrate the contributions of mothers, fathers, and other parental figures.

Spring Activities

With spring, comes a host of everyday activities that will brighten your speech sessions.

  • A gardening theme lets you explore everything from color concepts to the plant cycle, which makes it a nice theme for any age group.

  • Other outside activities, such as camping, flying kites, and blowing bubbles, are great spring themes to incorporate into speech and language activities, especially if your students have an interest in one of these areas.

  • Sports-loving students will love to have spring sports (such as baseball, soccer, and tennis) as themes in their speech therapy sessions.

  • Even spring cleaning incorporates lots of language, such as action words and sequencing. An hey, all our students can relate to cleaning in some way.

  • Going on (and packing for) a picnic is a favorite spring activity for many kids. Students might even enjoy working in groups to plan their own picnic (that you could actually carry out in a later session). This Google Slides picnic planning activity is free for email subscribers.

Spring Weather

The seasonal changes that occur in the spring are simple topics that students of all ages can relate to. Not to mention, the weather is a frequent topic of conversation in school, at home, and in the community.

Spring Plants and Animals

Talking about spring plants and animals is an opportunity to address vocabulary and language skills (and articulation targets) with a high-interest topic for many students.

  • Using a flower theme in speech and language therapy is very relevant in the spring and allows students to use many interesting language concepts.

  • Baby animals are a common springtime theme that encourage communication about animal species, growth, habitats, sounds, and more.

  • Similarly, the spring is a perfect time to use the beloved farm animals theme, as farms are often quite busy with baby animals.

  • A bug theme includes butterflies, bees, ladybugs, ants, etc. and is a fun way to expand speech and language using bug characteristics and features (such as with a bug guessing game).

While spring is blossoming outside, speech therapy sessions are buzzing with fun activities, too! These spring holidays, activities, weather, and plant and animal topics can help you choose themes to include in your speech therapy lesson plans as we welcome the fresh, new season.
